Over 60 million foreign tourists visited Spain in 2013, which was an absolute record for the country of the Iberian Peninsula.
Sunny and hospitable Spain attracts every year more and more tourists from around the world. This is clearly evidenced by the statistics for the past year. Spain is increasing in popularity among the tourists.
During 11 months of 2013 Spain have visited 57.6 million people, which is 5 % more than in the same period of 2012, according to official information of “Frontur” – the public authorities responsible for economic and tourism statistics within the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism.
As noted the Minister of Industry, Energy and Tourism Jose Manuel Soria, “tourism is the engine of the Spanish economy and there are many reasons to believe that 2013 will be a record for the country regarding to number of foreign tourists”. Given the fact that for 11 months of 2013 has been achieved the result of last year, the minister's words seem very truthful. On average for the month of December in Spain comes 2-2.5 million foreign tourists, so we can assume that when the official data for the full 2013 will be published that figure will be a highly record. The current registered record was achieved in 2007 and is equal to 58.5 million foreign tourists.
Among the Spanish regions, the palm of the number of foreign tourists is hold by Catalonia with 14.8 million people (25.8 % of the total number of tourists) . Followed by the Balearic Islands with 11 million people ( 19.2 % of the total number of tourists ) and the Canary Islands , which visited 9,5 million people ( 16.7% of the total number of tourists) . Closes the 4 leaders the Valencia Community with growth of 11.2% for 2013 and 9.9 % of the total number of tourists ( 5.7 million people ).
The main transport for foreign tourists to arrive is still the airport with 82.2 % of the total arrivals. The second most popular vehicle for visiting Spain in 2013 was a car.
