The Catalan capital continues to exceed the travel records, as evidenced by the statistics of 2013, which was very successful for the tourism sector. Over the past year 7.5 million of tourists visited Barcelona, who were accommodated in the hotels of the city. Total of foreign tourists, who were visiting Barcelona, spent in the Catalan capital 16.5 million nights, according to official figures released by the Council of Tourism of the City Hall of Barcelona.
For the first time in the history Barcelona has reached such high numbers of 7.5 million tourists, registered in hotel accommodation, 80% of whom were foreign citizens. Total of 7,571,766 people visited Barcelona, which amounted to 1.77% more than in 2012, when this figure was of 7,440,113 people. At the same time, the number of nights spent in Barcelona increased by half a million, so overnight stays with 15,931,932 in 2012 to 16,485,074 in 2013, 3.47 % more.
France became the main foreign tourist market for Barcelona in 2013, shifting from this position of U.S. citizens. Namely, 636,903 French tourists visited Barcelona in 2013, which is 11.3 % higher than a year earlier. The second market for visiting Barcelona became Great Britain. More than 600,000 British visited the Catalan capital in 2013, which is 6.3 % more than in 2012, which according to sources in the Council of Tourism Barcelona “has never been recorded before”. The United States has become the third supplier of tourists to Barcelona, with the figure of 627,417 tourists who visited Barcelona in 2013.
In his official speech, the president of the Tourism Council of Barcelona, Juan Gaspart , noted that ” Barcelona is a tourist fortress”, that is expressed in the variety of nationalities that visit the Catalan capital. Besides the already named nationalities, as France and the United Kingdom, new destinations are gaining strength, such as China , the Nordic countries and Russia, also highlighted the official.
Among these other nationalities , in 2013 Barcelona visited 453,102 tourists from Germany, 447,721 tourists from Italy, 233,823 tourists from Russia, and 152,622 tourists from Sweden.
