Barcelona – the first European Capital of Innovation

The Catalan capital has been recognized as the first European capital of innovation. Barcelona bypassed other European cities such as Grenoble in France and Groningen in the Netherlands. A jury of the European Commission praised the “holistic approach and uniqueness” of the city, which convinced experts that it should be of Barcelona the first innovation capital of Europe.

Barcelona won the honor by a vote held in Brussels this week. The meeting of experts from the European Commission took place in Brussels for two days and had the name “Invention Convention”. The purpose of this program is to highlight special role of many European cities in terms of innovation, which are both important engine and catalyst for progress . For consideration by the authoritative jury was received 60 nominations cities in Europe (they could apply for cities with populations of more than 100,000 people ). Three of them were selected and got to the final, including Barcelona, Grenoble (France) and Groningen (Netherlands).

The chairman of the jury, the European commissar Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, after the vote, said that ” the decision was very difficult.” The experts of European jury took into account such important factors as the uniqueness of the city , their holistic approach to innovation (” only succeed in one area is not enough “) , the creative component and, of course , the quality. Barcelona has all these qualities and characteristics. The jury was conquered by the city and its uniqueness.

The Mayor of Barcelona, Xavier Trias , after the announcement of the results , noted that “Barcelona has historically been known for its strong economy and industry”. He also remembered the huge success of Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992 and  that the region has become an important international tourist center in recent years. “But we do not want to depend only on the sports and tourism – concluded the Mayor of Barcelona. – Innovation – this is our way of life”.
