Catalonia is the industrial engine of Spain

Which region of Spain is the most developed if industrial aspect is concerned? We are sure that you have thought about this many times. The answer to that question can be obtained thanks to the "Survey of industrial production," conducted by the National Statistics Institute (NIE) of Spain.

The Survey of industrial production, recently published by the National Institute of Statistics, confirmed that Catalonia is the most industrialized region of Spain, as this autonomy represents 23.1% of the volume of total production in the country. Sectors such as textile, chemical, and pharmaceutical products are leading in the number of companies established in the Catalan territory. Andalucía (11.4%) and Valencia (10.6%) complete the ranking of the most industrialized regions of Spain.

The National Statistics Institute (NIE) has carried out this survey based on sampling and analysis of the 4000 industrial products manufactured and offered for sale. Catalonia significantly increased its advantage in terms of industrialization in recent years. In 2008, the industry of this region represented 22.6% of total Spanish production, but today it is already around  23.1%. Madrid occupies the sixth position in the ranking of industrial production with a share of 7%.

In addition, if the autonomous regions of Spain are compared for their participation in the national GDP, in this case, Catalonia is still the first region with a share of 18.9%, almost on par with that of Madrid (18.8%). They are followed by Andalusia (13.4%) and Valencia (9.4%). It should be emphasized the important role of the Canary Islands, with a share of only 0.9% in the Spanish industry, which is, however, accounting for 3.9% of GDP of Spain, thanks to the importance of the tourism sector in the economy of the Canary archipelago.

Coming back to industry statistics by region of Spain, it is worth noting that Catalonia represents 42.3% of the textile industry. In addition to 30.6% of oil refineries, chemical and pharmaceutical industries, as well as 27.2% of paper and graphic design production. 25.4% of the machines and industrial equipment are also produced in Catalonia. Among other regions, it is worth noting that 45.3% of the production and sale of leather products and footwear is located in Valencia.
