Catalonia leads in the number of international tourists

Catalonia received 10,083,516 foreign tourists in the first seven months of this year, representing an increase of 4.7% compared to the same period last year and, therefore, this province occupied the first place in the number of international arrivals, with a share of 23.8% of the total, according to the survey of tourist movements Frontur, published this week by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). In Spain, the number of tourists reached 42.3 million in the first seven months of this year, an increase of 11.1% compared to the same period of 2015, and in July 2016 the country was visited by 9.6 million tourists, which is by 9.3% more than last year.


According to the annual statistics, Catalonia is followed by the Canary Islands, which received 7.5 million foreign tourists, which is 13.2% more than in 2015, with 17.7% of the total amount, as well as the Balearic Islands (17.3% of total), which attracted 7.36 million foreign tourists, which is 12.7% more. They are followed by Andalusia with more than 6 million foreign tourists, 16% more than in January-July 2015, and Valencian community, which recorded the highest increase by 17.8% to 4.3 million visitors. The list of Spanish regions with the highest influx of tourists closes the community of Madrid, with more than 3.2 million visitors, representing 11.7% more than last year.



In July 2016, Catalonia has also become a leader in the number of foreign tourists, with 2.4 million arrivals, which is 3.8% more than in the same month of 2015 and 25.3% of all foreigners who visited Spain for the purpose of tourism. The second region that received the largest number of foreign tourists in July were the Balearic Islands, with 2.35 million arrivals, 24.7% of the total; followed by Andalusia, with 1.2 million tourists, 12.7% of the total number of foreign visitors.


      In addition, official statistics show that in July, the UK remained the largest source market for Spain, with 2.19 million visitors, representing 23.9% of the total and an increase of 11.4%; followed by France (+13.8%) and Germany (+3.5%), with 1.5 million and 1.27 million visitors respectively. From January to July 2016, the United Kingdom, as the main source of tourists to Spain, also recorded the highest growth by 15.3%, with more than 10.14 million visitors. That means taht the so-called "breixit" has had no negative effect on the Spanish tourist market.


Meanwhile, the Nordic countries, the fifth tourist market for Spain, with 7.3% of the total number of visitors to the country, showed an increase by 10.4% until July 2016, reaching 1.98 million tourists. At the same time, tourists from Italy increased by 7.2% to more than 2.18 million visitors. It should be noted that also increased by 10.4% the share of visitors from the Netherlands, with 1.98 million visitors and an increase of 7% in the number of tourists from the United States of America, with 1.16 million people. In addition, the influx of Russian tourists increased by 1.4% to 548.828 visitors.
