Celebrating Chinese New Year in Barcelona

This Saturday, February 1, will be held in Barcelona the grand celebration of the New Year 2014 according to the Chinese calendar. The Chinese New Year is celebrated around the world in the grand scale that could not get past the Catalan capital, as in Catalonia lives a large Chinese diaspora. The main event will be held near the Sagrada Familia , in which will participate the local organizations , and also the official Chinese guests representing China in the territory of Catalonia, such as ” Asia House ” and Chinese Consulate in Barcelona. The celebrations will be attended by the Mayor of Barcelona, Xavier Trias . In the festive process, which will take place on the streets of the city, will participate 800 participants with the colorful performances, dances and musical performances of the national Chinese culture.

Every year has its patron, expressed in one of the 12 animals of the Chinese calendar, and 2014 , according to ancient Chinese tradition , is the year of the horse. The main characteristics of the symbol of the new year, according to representatives of the “House of Asia ” in Catalonia, are stability , high endurance, talent and energy, and optimism. This year will be collected the fruits of the labors that was sown in the previous year, which was held under the sign of the snake.

The desfile will consist of a huge paper figures according to Chinese tradition and mythology, full of mystery and mysticism. Among them the figures of gigantic lion, dragon mask and, of course , a symbol of New 2014 Year  – wooden or green horse. In addition, the procession will include national Catalan elements – such as ” castellers ” and other figures of Catalan culture . As the chairman of the Board of Immigration in the City Hall of Barcelona said “the goal of such a combination of different cultures is to show the cultural diversity of Catalonia and the possibility of sharing of peaceful coexistence. Moreover, a joint celebration serves as an example of all that can be done together”.

At the end of the processes on the Gaudi's square in front of Sagrada Familia will be arranged the musical performance with traditional dances of both cultures.
