Garraf is a coastal region of Catalonia, which is located in the province of Barcelona. In the north it limits with the Alto Penedes, to the east with the Bajo Llobregat, to the south with the Mediterranean Sea, and to the west with the Bajo Penedes. The capital of the region is the city of Vilanova i la Geltru, and other important cities of the region are Sitges, San Pedro De Ribas, Canyellas, Cubellas, Olivella.
Most of the coast occupies the Garraf Natural Park, one of the largest green areas of Catalonia. The park is known for its hiking trails and the Buddhist temple of Sakya Tashi Ling, which is visited by thousands of pilgrims every year. Another example of medieval architecture, preserved to this day, is the hospital building in Olesa de Bonesvalls, which is open to the public.
The Garraf Park is located in the province of the same name, although it starts in Castelldefels, in the Sierra del Garraf mountain range. The Sierra del Garraf, in turn, refers to the southern coast of the Sierra de Marina or the Litoral, and represents a rich karstic landscape. It differs from the area of Eramprunya, which is characterized by its sandstones and reddish conglomerates.
The local landscape is reflected in traditional dishes of the area, as it represents an excellent combination of meat and fish dishes. Vegetables and meat represent land and mountains, and fish and seafood – the Mediterranean Sea. The main protagonist of local cuisine is undoubtedly fresh and tasty fish and seafood – fish, tuna, salmon, shrimp, snails, mussels and other seafood – are prepared here in different ways. Almost all dishes are served with salad, seasoned with the famous xato sauce, which is prepared with almonds, hazelnuts and other ingredients. We also recommend you try other typical dishes of the area: different sausages, escudella soup, fried onions calçots with special romesco sauce, and coca bread (sweet or salty).
Sitges – the center of cultural life
The indisputable cultural center of the coastal town of Garraf is the city of Sitges that is full of events throughout the year. In October of each year, you can visit the International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, known for its original program. The festival was established in 1971 and currently it offers visitors the latest news in the world of science fiction and horror films. It is one of the most important events in the film industry on the national level.
In addition, Sitges is well known for its old town and narrow streets with white houses and its blue shutters. Walking through them, you can visit the City Hall building, the Ron Museum – Bacardi House, which belonged to Facundo Bacardi, the founder of the famous rum brand, whose history can be known here (Plaça Ajuntament, 11). After visiting it, taking a pleasant stroll, you can reach the seafront of Sitges and the Mediterranean Sea to enjoy the spectacular views of its beaches.
Properties in the Costa del Garraf
Thanks to its spectacular features the residential properties in the Costa Garraf of Spain are very popular among buyers, especially the villas and houses on the beach. Moreover, here you can buy luxury apartments with sea views or near the Garraf Natural Park. In addition, the proximity to Barcelona and an active cultural life of the region increases the attractiveness of the commercial properties in the coast of the Garraf, as for the purchase or for the rent.
However, it is worth bearing in mind that, due to its natural features, the area has limited opportunities for new construction, so the value of properties here is slightly higher than in other coasts of Catalonia. Currently among the available offer there are houses and chalets on the coast of Garraf that are very interesting, for both residential and commercial purposes.
