The European Union has adopted amendments to the new law that the real “sangria” can be produced only in Spain and Portugal. Thus, the production of the Spanish national beverage is now protected by European legislation. Only sangria, made in the Iberian Peninsula can be considered genuine. Such amendments to the law in favor of the protection of geographical regions of production of alcoholic national beverages were adopted by the European Parliament after almost two years of negotiations. Now real sangria will be made under protected region mark, which is defined as the Iberian Peninsula, which is located by Spain and Portugal.
Upholding the production of sangria in Spain and Portugal was adopted in the first reading by a majority vote of European deputies, namely 609 people were in favor, 72 – against and only 4 members abstained from voting.
New amendments to the legislation, therefore does not prohibit the continued production of ” sangria ” in other countries of the European Union, but in this case, on the label of the beverage should be mandatory marked the place of manufacture and the name “sangria ” can only be used as a supplement to the phrase “alcoholic wine-based drink”, but not alone, as was done previously.
Countries of the EU have now one year to adapt their internal rules and laws to new ones, adopted by the European Parliament .
New norms of legislative concern also flavored sparkling alcoholic beverage “clarea” – the type of sangria, prepared on the basis of white wine and enjoying great success in Europe. “Clarea” is a kind of sangria and produced in Spain since ancient times. European Parliament recognized the official geographical area of production of the drink only in Spain, without mentioning Portugal in this case.
These legislative amendments, no doubt, contribute to the Spanish sector of production of alcoholic beverages, which has a deserved success in Europe.
