The Port of Barcelona will have its own railway

The Spanish Government, represented by the Minister of Development, Ana Pastor, and President of the Government of Catalonia, Artur Mas , signed on this Wednesday an agreement on the construction of the new railway access to the Port of Barcelona. Construction works will allow to go in and out of freight trains directly from the port, and will contribute to the expansion of the territory and the construction of a new port terminal .

The official protocol includes building plan and, according to representatives of the Government of Catalonia, the overall goal is “to begin with the construction of the new rail approach to the port as soon as possible”.

The act of signing was held at the International Centre of Barcelona “World Race”, which was attended by the Minister of Development of Spain, Ana Pastor , President of Catalonia, Artur Mas , advisor on territorial politic of government of Catalonia, Santi Vila, president of the Port of Barcelona Sixte Cambra , president of the Catalan Railways Enric Ticó, president of the Association of Ports of Spain , José Llorca and president of the Association of the national railways , Gonzalo Ferre.

Construction of a new rail entrance to the sea port of Barcelona will help to increase trade market and significantly improve the transport system of the entire zone. The Port will become more accessible as the entrance by the train and also by car, because of the construction of a new highway. In this case, it will be used existing highways in this suburb of Barcelona, which will be linked and connected to the sea port directly.

The total investment for the proposed construction will be of 108 million euros, 50 % of which will be allocated from the federal budget of Spain.
